An unlikely Congress member blows Josh Marshall's NSA argument to smithereens

Today Diane Feinstein, one of the most pro-NSA Congress members, say she is "totally opposed" to spying on foreign leaders unless we are in hostilities with that country at any given time: ""Unless the United States is engaged in hostilities against a country or there is an emergency need for this type of surveillance, I do not believe the United States should be collecting phone calls or emails of friendly presidents and prime ministers.

Josh Marshall, on the other hand, said today, "This is what signals intelligence agencies are designed to do."

Dear Josh Marshall: Please explain which allied countries are spying on which "US Leaders"

Being an Obama loyalist is ok, but making stuff up without even giving a hint as to what evidence backs up a claim is bad journalism.

"Churning through countless domestic phone calls is one thing - that has very real constitutional implications. It may be a similar thing with doing that in Spain or other countries in Europe and the Middle East, though the constitutional questions are very different. But please, please spare me the shock and surprise that the US spies on foreign leaders, even allies, even close allies. These countries spy on our leaders too. The only real exception is within the special club of the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand where, for a variety of historical reasons, a pretty different set of rules and integration apply."

By the way, Marshall had "enough" since day 1 of Snowden's leaks. His headline makes it seem as he now suddenly stopped considering NSA leaks shocking. He never did.

The USA is spying on entire cabinets including Presidents. Are other countries doing the same to us? No "I bet" or "I guess" or "you can't prove they aren't". Those don't count as journalism.

NSA does not say whether it wiretapped Prime Minister of Spain

Part of the second paragraph, translated in English from the Spanish version of the largest Spanish newspaper (El Pais):

He (the US ambassador in Madrid) has not even given assurances that Rajoy and other government officials, current or previous, have not been spied. The government suspects they have been and there is Spanish among at least 35 world leaders spied on by the NSA, according to a document leaked by the ex-analyst Edward Snowden.

Senator Bernie Sanders' reaction to NSA spying on foreign allies

He does not call Glenn Greenwald names.
He does not call it a right wing conspiracy to harm this administration because John Kerry is in Europe.

Police won't charge George Zimmerman for alleged furniture theft

Source: UPI

The man acquitted in the shooting death of an unarmed black teen won't be charged with stealing furniture from his mother-in-law, Lake Mary, Fla., police said.

Department spokesman Officer Zach Hudson characterized the matter as "a civil dispute" between George Zimmerman and his mother-in-law landlord, Machelle Dean, the Orlando Sentinel reported Wednesday.

Zimmerman, 29, is the former Neighborhood Watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., acquitted by a Seminole County jury in July in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman said he killed Martin in self-defense.

Zimmerman's mother-in-law, Machelle Dean filed a police report last month, accusing, Zimmerman of stealing a king-sized bed, an antique chair and several other furniture pieces from the house he rented from her, a police report said.

NSA suggests that Israel's Mossad, not them, were behind hacking of French presidency

France's Le Monde newspaper reports today:

"the NSA does not say that the Mossad carried out the attack but nevertheless, seems to consider it necessary to mention the existence of a reasonable doubt as regards the Jewish state."

Glenn Greenwald drops NSA bombshell in Italy

The NSA spied on the Italian government and companies, for reasons beyond terrorism.

L'Espresso magazine broke the story thanks to its source, American journalist Glenn Greenwald. Here's a translated-to-english page of the report: http://espresso.repubblica.it/internazionale/2013/10/24/news/cosi-ci-spiano-stati-uniti-e-gran-bretagna-1.138890

Excerpt:

"Italy has not only been in the crosshairs of the system created by Prism 007 U.S.. With a program called parallel and convergent Tempora, also British intelligence had spied on optical fiber cables that carry phone calls, emails and Internet traffic of our country. Relevant information gathered by GCHQ, the Government Communications Head Quarter ie, they could swap with the American NSA. But from the files of Snowden shows that the skimming of these data follows unscrupulous criteria, which is not only the fight against terrorism."

Reuters and others have picked up the story: http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/24/us-italy-usa-spying-idUSBRE99N0Q420131024?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews
