Fugitive ex-Manatee sheriff's deputy arrested in Alaska after more than 23 years on the run

Fugitive ex-Manatee sheriff's deputy arrested in Alaska after more than 23 years on the run
Posted by MARC R. MASFERRER on June 20, 2014

MANATEE -- A former Manatee County sheriff's deputy wanted since 1991 on a capital sexual battery charge has been arrested in Alaska on identify theft charges, according to federal officials.

The FBI early Friday arrested Joseph Kennan May, 60, at his home in Eagle River, Alaska.
He was scheduled to appear in federal court in Anchorage at 6:30 p.m. EDT.
May had been the subject of a federal warrant charging unlawful flight to avoid prosecution since 1993, according to a news release.

"According to the indictment, May has been living under the identity of a stepbrother, Michael Camp, who died in his teens in the 1970s in Pennsylvania," the release states. "The indictment charges two counts of unlawfu use of a Social Security number, stemming from May's use of Camp's name and number to apply for an Alaska's driver's license in 2009 and unemployment benefits in 2013."

May also is charged with aggravated identify theft.
If convicted of the federal charges, May could be sentenced to up to 12 years in prison.

He faces a life prison sentence if convicted of capital sexual battery in Manatee.
May, a former road patrol deputy, was arrested in 1990 and accused of raping a 6-year-old girl. May fled the area before he could be tried on a charge of capital sexual battery. According to an arrest document, May had sex with the child "on numerous occasions between 1970 and 1977 within Manatee County at several locations.''
May admitted to investigators that he fondled the victim and had oral sex with her. But he denied intercourse, the report stated.

Sheriff's deputies arrested May in the fall of 1990.
He was held on high bond until Oct. 30, 1990, when a judge reduced it to $5,000, court records state.
A trial was set for March 1991. By then, May was gone.
Five months later, on Aug. 28, 1991, a judge issued another warrant for May's arrest.
Officials said May committed his alleged crimes before joining the sheriff's office, has not been back to Manatee County since.

Federal investigators recently discovered that May's identity and the alias were linked.

"I started working on the case about a week ago," assistant U.S. attorney Thomas C. Bradley said. "It came to our attention in a couple weeks."
He may also face additional charges, Bradley said.

Sheriff's office spokesman Dave Bristow said the sheriff's office would not comment on May's arrest until next week. He said investigators plan to meet with the state attorney's office to determine how to proceed, since the case is so old.

Nature's Path Invests in a Sustainable Future with Purchase of 2,760 Acres of Organic Farmland

This is a press release below, and maybe they can help in the effort needed in Vermont. They are going to need it, as Monsanto and Big Grocery are suing to overturn the new GMO labeling law in Vermont. There is a thread on this topic right here on DU.

Richmond, BC (May 21, 2014) – Nature’s Path, North America’s largest independent organic cereal company, lives by the mantra “always leave the earth better than you found it.” This week, the company took another step along that path with the purchase of 2,760 acres in northern Montana that will help increase organic farmland, attract and educate new farmers, as well as meet the growing demand for organic grains and legumes.

The need for organic farmland has increased as the demand continues to grow at an expected rate of 14 percent through 2018[1]. At the same time, the number of farmers is declining, down 4 percent since 2007[2], as older farmers retire without enough new farmers to take their place.

“As an independent, family-run company, we have the freedom to put our money where our heart is, in support of sustainable agriculture—beyond just making organic products,” said Arran Stephens, Founder and CEO of Nature’s Path. “By purchasing fertile land and working with organic family farmers, we ensure the purity of our foods, increase organic acreage to sustain growth, prevent poisoning the environment, and provide for future generations.”

This land has had no agri-chemicals or fertilizers on it for over 20 years and is currently being tilled and planted with wheat, oats, Kamut®, lentils, peas, buckwheat and safflower. Grains are rotated with legumes, which fix nitrogen in the soil, while the safflower oil is used as an innovative bio-fuel for farm equipment.

A vital element to ensure organic farmland and food for generations to come is attracting and training a new generation of farmers. Nature’s Path is proud to work together with Doug Crabtree and Anna Jones-Crabtree of Vilicus Farms to farm the land as well as support their one-of-a-kind organic farmer training institute in Montana through which younger grain farmers apprentice to learn all aspects of the trade.

“Working with Doug and Anna, we hope to attract younger farmers and prepare them for successful careers,” said Dag Falck, Organic Program Manager at Nature’s Path. “We have the utmost respect for organic farmers and are truly dedicated to assisting them in any way we can.” As part of the company’s mission, Nature’s Path purchased two farms in Saskatchewan in 2008; the addition of the Montana farm increases their stewardship to 5,640 acres, in addition to dozens of independent farmer families and many thousands of acres across North America who grow and supply their organic commodities.

Founded in 1985, Nature’s Path Organic Foods is headquartered in Richmond, British Columbia and employs hundreds of valued team members at its four facilities in Canada and the United States. The privately held, family-owned company produces breakfast and snack foods sold in grocery and natural food stores in 40 countries around the world. The company’s innovative brands include Nature’s Path®, Love Crunch®, Qi’a®, Que Pasa®, Flax Plus®, and EnviroKidz®. Deplorable! What Nan Rich has to put up with from Florida Dem Party Chair...

It's just so hard to believe. Charlie's campaign is weak. It's weak with dems now, because he won't debate. He says why help her to get known? The people have a right to a debate on our policy here. It's the process. The party would not allow her to speak at dem convention while she was the ONLY declared candidate! That's what you get with a corporate wing appointed by Bill Nelson chair!

It's a coronation that is wearing thin on democrats.

It is deplorable.

Florida Accountant Timothy Deegan Kept 3 Women As Sex Slaves

Florida Accountant Timothy Deegan Kept 3 Women As Sex Slaves

Posted: 06/15/2014 9:24 am EDT Updated: 06/16/2014 11:59 am EDT

A Florida accountant has been accused of confining three women in his home as sex slaves, prostituting them and posting a video of himself raping at least one of the victims.

Gainesville resident Timothy Deegan, 53, was charged with three counts of human trafficking June 6th, the Gainesville Sun reported last week and could face additional charges. Deegan owns a tax business and a sizable home sporting a fountain and statues of lions near a large driveway.

But inside the house, investigators said they found traps, running cameras and weapons, which Deegan allegedly used to subjugate the three women.
In a complaint filed by the Gainesville-Alachua County Drug Force and obtained by the Gainesville Sun, authorities said Deegan met the women on an escort website last December. He soon began to prostitute the women to other clients, providing transportation and collecting money they earned while keeping them high on cocaine.
Authorities said Deegan quickly took control of his victims' lives by monitoring their trysts with johns via GPS on their cell phones, threatening them, hiding cameras in his home to watch them and recording sex acts without their knowledge.

One alleged victim contacted police in December after she said she found a recording of Deegan raping her while she was unconscious on sleeping medication. Deegan was arrested on a sexual battery charge in the incident, according to CBS News

After being released on a $250,000 bond, officials arrested Deegan again in April for allegedly buying and selling crack cocaine, according to My Fox Orlando.

When officers arrested Deegan at his home, they found traps in his residence. The knobs had also been taken off the doors, and syringes and homemade sex tapes were found.

Two other women came forward, claiming that Deegan kept the women constantly medicated on drugs before forcing them to have sex with him or other men. He would then stream videos of the sex acts online, according to the complaint. The women also said that Deegan showed them letters from other women he had allegedly drugged and sexually battered. When his victims weren't working for him, they were kept locked inside the home where they were under constant surveillance and threatened with guns, records state.

Neighbors who heard of the arrest expressed fear at the man living next door to them. One neighbor who anonymously spoke to The Gainesville Sun said he had had suspicions.
"About three weeks ago, a car followed my daughter as she walked through the neighborhood, then the car pulled over to his house. When I heard human trafficking, he could have been looking for my daughter," the man said. "One night a truck drove up and dropped this girl off in the driveway. She was in a fetal position, moaning. Girls were screaming over there. Some of them would be outside on the phone, and they would be cursing."

Colson to sue Pasco Dems....

He is the most knowledgeable democrat in Pasco County! With the central FLA Dems failing to fill chairs, or have candidates this is just baffling!

Colson says he'll sue Pasco Dems
Friday, June 13, 2014 1:25pm

Pasco Democrats might soon be at war, not with Republicans but with a disgruntled former member of their own local executive committee.

Clay Colson, a Democratic precinct committeeman from Land O' Lakes, was kicked out of the group in May after he breached membership rules by missing three consecutive monthly meetings without an excuse.

Only Colson sees it differently and argues that he sent an email ahead of one of those meetings to explain he had a work obligation that night and would not attend.

On Monday, he showed up to argue his case as the committee gathered at a union hall in Land O' Lakes for its monthly meeting.

"They threatened to have me removed by police," said Colson, who was eventually allowed to speak. He accused committee leaders of abusing their authority and threatened to sue them.

"It's a matter of principle. Principles still matter to some people," Colson told Bay Buzz on Friday.
Lynn Lindeman, chairman of the Pasco Democrats, has sent emails to Colson in recent weeks saying the issue is closed but he's welcome to apply to rejoin the 55-member group at any time.

"These conversations are over," Lindeman wrote in one message May 14.

But Colson says the issue runs deeper than a few absences.

He's says he's being targeted by state-level Democrats for criticizing their support of Alex Sink in the recent special election against Republican David Jolly to succeed the late C.W. Bill Young in Congress.

Colson said they should have backed Democrat Jessica Ehrlich, an attorney who challenged Young two years ago.
He also blasted their support of Rick Kriseman while fellow Democrat Kathleen Ford was still challenging him in St. Petersburg's mayoral race.

"You can't give to one Democrat and not another," he said.

Death Throes: The Mainstream Media Is Hanging By A Thread

Death Throes: The Mainstream Media Is Hanging By A Thread

As the May ratings for the 4 major news networks come in, it’s never been more apparent that the mainstream media is in its death throes. According to a recent article from Politico, Fox News is faced with its lowest numbers in over a decade. While the networks continue to maintain enough viewers to stay afloat, they have absolutely failed to attain the younger demographic. Another key factor coming from May ratings is just how old Fox News viewers are. Take for example, Bill O’Reilly’s show…O’Reilly had his lowest month since 2001 in the key demo, with 308,000 viewers. Yes, O’Reilly is still the No. 1 program in cable news in both total and demo viewers, averaging 2,136,000 total viewers in May. But the majority of those viewers are over the age of 55. In fact, the median age for O’Reilly is now just over 72 years old. The average Fox News viewer overall is 68.8, while the average ages of MSNBC and CNN viewers were 62.5 and 62.8, respectively. Simply put, the largest news networks are hemorrhaging viewers, and most of what’s left are now senior citizens. If any institution is going to survive, it of course needs younger adherents. And this is not an abnormal year.

Breitbart reported an almost identical story two years ago for the month of May. This is a clear and long-term trend of decline. And it isn’t just television news of course. Print media is likely on its way out as well, with only about a quarter of the population saying they have confidence in newspapers. 152 newspapers were shutdown in 2011 alone. Though I couldn’t find any more recent data, I suspect last year wasn’t much better.

Honestly, it’s an exciting trend to me. The mainstream media has failed to inform us on so many levels. You can pick any day or week of the year, and observe the most trending news items littering our television screens. What you’ll find is a news media that desperately holds onto any celebrity gossip for days on end, and lies through its teeth at every opportunity. Look at what they did this week. They failed to report on the possibly earth-shaking events that could unfold from a yearly meeting of the most powerful and influential people on earth. If they can’t do that, then what are they good for? The lies are the most telling of all. For most of my life, I was told that the media is only concerned about ratings. “If it bleeds it leads” or something to that effect. I was led to believe that a news organization would do anything for ratings, but perhaps that isn’t exactly so. If all they cared about was being seen and heard, why are their ratings in the toilet?

If you’re reading this right now, you probably already know. There’s a good chance you’ve at least partially abandoned television and print media. You know deep down that it can’t be trusted. You know it’s not just about ratings. If numbers were all that a multi-billion dollar industry needed to survive, they could do it. It’s not that hard. Just tell the truth. The world is a baffling and complicated place, teeming with mystery and beauty. We’re on a rock hurdling through space with billions of people living on its surface, and not one of them is identical to another. The world is an unlimited tap of incredible technological advances, political intrigue, wild natural phenomena, and an endless parade creative and courageous people. The truth of our world is filled with awe and wonder. They could get all the ratings they could possibly dream of, if they just told the truth. And, yet, from the school textbooks of our formative years, to the talking heads of our adult lives, every source of mainstream information appears to be a sanitized version of the truth, or even an outright lie.

“When I was at CNN a decade ago, it was glistening,” Now, he said, “it looks like Hitler’s bunker….torn-up carpet, feces all over the wall and on the floor in the bathroom. It’s rotting. Folks, I’ve been in those exact rooms,” he added. “It literally looked like a gas station bathroom in the worst part of town. It was rotting and those people were in hell. It’s a skeleton of what it was, it’s a globalist operation and they’re nothing.”
For their sake, I hope he’s exaggerating. As for me, I have a pretty bad case of schadenfreude. This tired old media, this purveyor of a false reality, is a dead man walking.

In response to Tampa Tribune on Snowden-Waurishuk: Edward J. Snowden: Tinker, traitor, liar, spy

Waurishuk: Edward J. Snowden: Tinker, traitor, liar, spy

Read the above link if you wish. The worst propaganda piece yet. Below, a great response.
The ONLY liar in this piece is the author. He insinuates that Snowden has given documents to the Russians and the Chinese when that is clearly not the case. The appointed propagandist states that Snowden could have gone through channels and got himself on 6o Minutes etc. Perhaps the author needs to watch the PBS Frontline Special that details the heroic actions taken by five NSA analysts and executives to stop the UNCONSTITUTIONAL activities of the NSA by going "through channels." Four men and one woman all worked to stop the very same activities e.g., PRISM program of massive data collection on the American population etc and they got nowhere.

Colonel the only traitor(s) here are those who ignore an defecate on the constitution through actions taken both individually and collectively to violate the privacy and freedom promised all Americans by this sacred document. You sir together with the rest of your sorry cabal who kneel at the feet of "The Corporation" and the American Oligarchy with a more than able assist from the corporate media are the problem, not we the people. You promote fear and cast blame ignoring the prescient statement of Herr Goebbels... "Once you have them (US) in fear, the rest is easy."

In fact one NSA executive in fact was hounded legally for years to the point of financial ruin due to legal expenses. The day before his trial was to begin the NSA/Federal Govt legal team dropped all charges and fined him $25 dollars. This guy went from leading NSA Exec to working at an Apple Store!

Snowden was aware of the trashing that these five fellow patriots were handed and thus engineered his actions to counter the predictable response of a corrupt corporatist government. Mr Snowden has prevailed and it is up to the American people remaining who still respect truth, to support and advocate on his behalf in order to effect some reversal of our corrupt corporatist government. One thing that Snowden has exposed is that the notion of Freedom in America today is an Orwellian term!

Mr. Snowden who is an American Patriot of EPIC Proportion in the same vein as General Smedley Butler who stopped an American Coup d'etat against FDR in the 1930's, himself a multiple Congressional Medal of Honor winner is known for a famous speech entitled "War is a Racket." You should watch it reinacted on youtube... Trust me you need to watch it!

Curiously the PROPAGANDIST err author here ignores facts by the boatload substituting his own bias for truth that is supported either by government statements affirming or failing to refute statements made by HERO Edward Snowden! Certainly as a former spy, the Colonel here understands that any trial that HERO Snowden would face would be a kangaroo court of the first order. John Russell, Dade City

A note to John Kerry - Will Bergdahl be able to testify before Congress on CSPAN like you did?

Letter in the Tampa Bay Times to the Editor:

Gagging the whistle-blowers

Neither convicted national security leaker Pvt. Chelsea Manning nor Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl are your typical, scrape-the-barrel, brainwashed soldiers. This was evident when Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel triumphantly announced to an audience at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan that Bergdahl had been released, and none of them offered any reaction.

Bergdahl told his parents that he had lost his faith in the Army and was ashamed to even be an American after what he had seen in Afghanistan. He walked out of his base one night, significantly without his weapon, and was captured by the Taliban.

Manning was given access to videos showing atrocities being committed by our troops in Iraq and naively thought that Americans should be informed, and for her trouble is doing 32 years at Fort Leavenworth.

Bergdahl also has a story to tell, about what he saw happen in Afghanistan, but will he be allowed to tell it? Not if President Obama, Hagel, Secretary of State John Kerry and all the chicken-hawks in Congress have anything to say about it.

WNYC News - 71 (many prominent) New Yorkers arrested for child porn

(I looked for other links, and there is only one other strange one. I only heard about this as someone was just mentioning it on TV. Appears to be ignored, totally.)

71 Arrested in Child Porn Sting
Wednesday, May 21, 2014
By Annmarie Fertoli

Dozens of New Yorkers, including a Queens police officer and a Brooklyn rabbi, have been arrested and charged with possession, production and distribution of child pornography. Authorities are calling it the largest such operation ever in the state.

Special Agent James Hayes, with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, said officers found tens of thousands of images shared on peer-to-peer networks.

Hayes called the crimes “hideous,” “depraved” and “shocking.” He added that perpetrators aren’t just stereotypical drifters — they come from all walks of life.

"They worked as nurses, paramedics, caretakers for mentally ill adults, computer programmers and architects,” he said. “One was an airline pilot and one was a police officer.”

The five-week operation yielded 71 arrests. Hundreds of devices, including laptops, tablets and smart phones were seized. Authorities said they expect additional charges against those arrested after their devices are examined.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said the crimes lead to repeat victimization.

“Each time that one of those recordings of a violent sexual assault is downloaded and viewed by a stranger over the internet, that child is being victimized all over again,” he said.

Vance is also urging state legislators to increase the penalties for possession and promotion of child pornography.
