Fired Oklahoma City nursing home worker threatened beheading, police say

http://newsok.com/article/5346476

In a bizarre coincidence, a fired Oklahoma City nursing home employee was arrested Friday after a co-worker reported he threatened to cut her head off.

Jacob Mugambi Muriithi, 30, is being held in the Oklahoma County jail on a terrorism complaint. His bail is set at $1 million.

“We take these threats very seriously,” Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater said.

The arrest came on the same day police in Moore revealed fired Vaughan Foods worker Alton Alexander Nolen beheaded a co-worker after he was fired Thursday. Nolen is a Muslim convert.

FBI probing past of recently fired Oklahoma man who beheaded woman

http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/26/us/oklahoma-beheading/index.html

The idea that a man who's been trying to convert others to Islam ends up beheading someone is alarming enough, but perhaps even more given what has been happening in the Middle East.

The Islamist extremist group ISIS has made a name for its itself using such tactics, going so far as to record the beheadings of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff as well as British aid worker David Haines.

And they've threatened more to come, especially if the United States and its allies continue to launch airstrikes at the group in Iraq and Syria. This has spurred concerns that ISIS sympathizers may similarly lash out against innocents in the West.

`3,000 European jihadis` now in Syria, Iraq: EU

Brussels: The number of Europeans joining Islamist fighters in Syria and Iraq has jumped by a third to around 3,000 in a few months, the EU counter terrorism chief said Tuesday.

In an exclusive interview with AFP, Gilles de Kerchove said the flow of Europeans may have been boosted by the Islamic State militant group`s declaration in June of a caliphate straddling Syria and Iraq.

"My own assessment is that we`re about 3,000," he said when asked how many European fighters have flocked to the extremists` cause.

In June, he said there were 2,000 such fighters from Europe.

"The flow has not been dried up, and therefore possibly the proclamation of the caliphate has had some impact," de Kerchove said

Islamic State Destroys Ancient Sites and Antiquities.

The heaviest damage confirmed so far has taken place in the grand palace at Kalhu, from which Assyrian King Ashurnasirpal II reigned in the 9th century BC, Rasheed said. The palace walls are lined with reliefs describing the king's military campaigns and conquests or depicting him hunting lions or making sacrifices to the gods.

"They are cutting these reliefs into small parts and selling them," Rashid said. "They don't need to excavate. They just need a chainsaw to cut (off) the king's head or legs if they want. "Recently they carved off a relief depicting a winged demon holding a sacred plant and sold it abroad, he said. "It is now beyond borders."

Authorities fear other sites will soon face destruction, including Mosul's city museum, which has rare collections of Assyrian artifacts, and the 2,300-year-old city of Hatra, a well-preserved complex of temples further south. From both locations, militants ordered out antiquities officials, chastising them for protecting "idols," Rashid said. So far, it appears the militants have not done anything with the artifacts at the sites because they are awaiting instructions from their religious authorities, he said.

The Islamic State terrorists seek to purge society of everything that doesn't conform with their strict, puritanical version of Islam. That means destroying not only relics seen as pagan but even some Islamic sites - Sunni Muslim shrines they see as idolatrous, as well as mosques used by Shiites, a branch of Islam they consider heretical.

What should the NFL do?

1. Suppose someone tweets they saw player x hit his wife. No proof . No arrest. Wife denies. Does the NFL suspend the player?

2. Suppose NFL wife calls police saying "my husband hit me". Police arrive and she has a bruise on her face but recants her phone call saying "it was a misunderstanding" . Hes arrested but she "stands" by her husband and says the bruise was from a fall and not from him. Should the NFL suspend him pending trial?

3. Suppose NFL wife calls police saying "my husband hit me". Police arrive and she has a bruise on her face and she stands by her statement that he hit her. He arrested pending trial. Does the NFL await for verdict , suspend him immediately before the verdict or throw him out of the league immediately?

4. NFL player is found guilty of domestic violence but the wife asks the judge for counseling and no jail time for her NFL husband and the judge agrees. We all agree that he should get a penalty. Should they throw him out of league?

The NFL has some tough decisions.

ISIS Message Board Encourages Times Square Attack

A post on an online message board for Islamic State sympathizers encourages would-be terrorists to attack tourist hot spots in the United States, — and Times Square is the top target.

The post is titled “To the Lone Wolves in America: How to Make a Bomb in Your Kitchen, to Create Scenes of Horror in Tourist Spots and Other Targets.” It includes bomb-making instructions and a list of ingredients, even how to pack it with shrapnel, WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb reported.

Other American tourist spots are also on the threat list, including the Las Vegas Strip.

“This is a new world, if you will, or the evolving world of terrorism, and we’re staying ahead of it,” NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said Tuesday. “We’ve been focused on it, and I believe that we are as prepared as any entity could be to deal with the threats.”

Breast Cancer Screenings In Older Women May Lead To Over-Diagnosis, Study Says

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/15/breast-cancer-screenings-older-women_n_5822600.html?ir=Fifty

While regular screenings can be useful in early detection of breast cancer, age should be considered when weighing the benefits. The United States Preventive Services Task Force currently recommends women between ages 50 and 74 go in for mammograms every other year, but a new study says that, for women over 70, there may not be much of a benefit.

A Netherlands-based study published in the British Medical Journal argues that screenings in women over 70 may actually lead to over-diagnosis and, consequently, over-treatment.

In the Netherlands, the ceiling for breast cancer screenings was upped from 69 to 75 in the late 1990s. Researchers looked at screening data for around 25,000 Dutch women ages 70 to 75 and also for over 13,000 women ages 76 to 80, for a period of 15 years starting in 1995. Their analysis showed that after the age limit for recommended screenings was increased, the number of cases of early stage breast cancer also increased. The diagnoses went from around 249 incidences per 100,000 women to nearly 363. Diagnoses for advanced stage breast cancer, however, fell slightly, from around 59 to 52 cases per 100,000 women.

They calculated that for every advanced stage diagnosis in women of this age, around 20 "extra" diagnoses for early stage breast cancer are made, which they consider an over-diagnosis.
