"Republican senators now regret not doing more to contain Trump"

From this article:

You. Thickheaded. ASSHOLES.

“We should have done more to push back, both against his rhetoric and some of the things he did legislatively,” said the [Republican] lawmaker. “The mistake we made is that we always thought he was going to get better. We thought that once he got the nomination, and then once he got a Cabinet he was going to get better, he was going to be more presidential.”

Let me translate. "The mistake we made is that we thought those shells falling on Fort Sumter were full of donuts. We thought that once the slaveholders seceded from the Union, and then got their own government, they were going to get better, they were going to be less treasonous and stop demanding to own other human beings as property."

Who has had to end relationships with family members today?

I've scraped off two family members (and counting) today because of racist posts on social media. For example, I posted an angry shot of the Trumper carrying a Confederate Battle Flag in the halls of Congress, and I had an uncle who responded "About time, looks better than BLM bullshit."

So I immediately blocked his posts, and moved on. For all intents and purposes, he's out of my life. I do not expect to speak to him again on the green side of the grass. Not by choice, in any case.

Voted today in Florida 1st.

Banked my vote for Joe, Kamala, and Phil Ehr (who's running against the human candiru*, Matt Gaetz). I voted at an extension office just north of Pensacola, a very red area. The wait was about 2 hours; the machines were down for about 15-20 minutes, but they got them running again.

Historical comparison

An idle thought: if Trump is the Cantaloupe Caligula, that would mean the leader that follows him would be analogous to Claudius.
A further idle thought: hmm, that kinda holds up. So, parallels between Claudius and Joe Biden:

Stutter: check
First wife dead: check
Wants to restore the Republic: check
Way smarter than his opponents give him credit for: check.

Hey, this holds up! Except...if Biden is Claudius, that means who comes after? Nero! Who would be the American Nero? Chris Christie? Tucker Carlson after a few KFC Buckets? Hm. Let's hope the parallels break down at that point.

Things I used to keep the mind busy while I cleaned up my backyard after Hurricane Sally and waited for the power to come back on.

I didn't see this coming!

Some good news from Pensacola!

"BREAKING: Pensacola City council just voted to remove & relocate the Lee Square Confederate Monument from downtown Pensacola."

I thought the good ole boys would win the day, but the vote was 6 to 1 to take the statue down!

There's a special room in hell...

There's a special place in hell waiting for John Bolton. It looks like a Congressional meeting room with an audience and up front there's a demon who looks like Adam Schiff. So this is Bolton's eternity:
Demon Schiff: Mr. Bolton, will you please present your testimony to Congress?
Bolton, tied to a chair and doomed to answer the same way every time: No, Congressman, I need to save that for my book!
<Another demon slaps a big piece of duct tape over Bolton's mustache and pulls it off.>
Duct Tape: RRIIIIIPPPPPP
Bolton: AUUUUUGH!!!
Mustache: <grows back>
Demon Schiff: Mr. Bolton, will you please present your testimony to Congress?
John Bolton: No, Congressman, I need to save that for my book!
Duct Tape: RRIIIIIPPPPPP
For ever and ever and ever...

Replacement for Columbus?

My choice for a replacement for Christopher Columbus as the focal point of Italian-American pride: Enrico Fermi. Replace all the statues of Columbus with ones of Enrico Fermi (although we don't need a day off for his birthday). Let's have the Italian-American community look up to someone who:
1. Actually came to America
2. Actually discovered something

Quite a turnaround here in Pensacola! (RE: removal of Confederate statue)

"The Pensacola City Council on Thursday evening unanimously approved an item to start the 30-day waiting period required by council policy for the city to alter or remove a historical marker."

That doesn't mean the statue is definitely going away -- I'd say the odds are still against it being taken down. However, earlier this week, Mayor Grover Robinson seemed to dismiss the discussion altogether.
