Google this -- Soviet War Crimes -- and read the article on Wikipedia.
It details in vast, shocking detail what Russian forces did all over Eastern Europe -- from the Baltic states to conquered Germany to Ukraine and beyond -- from mid-WWII to present. Rapes, gang-rapes, deportation to forced labor camps, torture ... AND ON AN INDUSTRIAL SCALE ... by the thousands, hundreds of thousands, and sometimes millions.
People of the time said that the Russians were WORSE than the Nazis.
Joseph Stalin reportedly stated that he should "understand it if a soldier who has crossed thousands of kilometres through blood and fire and death has fun with a woman or takes some trifle."
For utterly jaw-dropping, Ukraine-specific info, look at these, under bolded headers: Massacre of Grishchino and Massacre of Feodosia. Note: I'd cite that text here, but it's so very brutal, people should read it prepared and by choice, not just come upon it unsuspecting here.
At the end, there is a whole section on War Crimes Trials and Prosecutions for the Russian perpetrators, continuing to the present: On 27 March 2019, Lithuania convicted 67 former Soviet military and KGB officials.
The Russians whitewashed all of this and never came to a public reckoning about their crimes.

Manchin & Sinema - Comment Sent
I am CRUSHED that Joe Manchin's "no" could doom Build Back Better. I just sent the following comment to Senator Manchin. I also forwarded it to Senator Sinema, asking her if she could use any kernel of influence she has to get Manchin to change his vote:
My middle-class parents worked like dogs and saved up $150,000 for their retirement and thought they were fortunate. After my mother's stroke, she was totally paralyzed on one side. My parents BLEW through every penny of that money paying for the in-home caregivers my mother needed to get my mom to the toilet and the shower -- to even turn over in bed. Then they were BROKE. I woke up at 3 a.m., worried sick, for FIVE YEARS. We had NO ALTERNATIVE but to put my terrified mother into an understaffed nursing home, crammed to the brink. You, Joe Manchin, could have changed this. This was your chance to help middle-class people in so many ways. You could end SO MUCH HUMAN SUFFERING. WHY WHY WHY did you not vote for Build Back Better?
Help! Political Comments from a "Friend"
I could use some DU help!
My husband and I are friends with another couple ... the wife, "Jane" I'll call her, is a die-hard conservative. She was leery about Trump before his election but has since gone whole hog. My husband is very good friends with her husband; they share an interest in biking, hiking, etc. We two couples have gone on a couple of vacations. I don't particularly want to blow up the relationship between us.
Now, I text and share like crazy with my like-minded Dem friends, but I made up my mind in 2015 to NOT engage in political discussions with staunch right wingers. Just don't have the energy or interest in "getting into it" with someone who is not going to change. So I never ever initiate anything political with anyone. Oh, other than that we don't have family gatherings anymore ever since one of my in-laws said that Middle Eastern people were "sand" and then the N word. Disgusting. Honey, you're not going to eat another morsel of my food, ever.
You know what's coming ....
In the weeks before the election, unsolicited, Jane sent me three videos over Facebook, one video alleging Biden was senile, one video alleging Senator Harris used the CA DOJ to mistreat an anti-abortion activist (hoo boy on that one), and then a video sticking up for Trump re election fraud.
Why send them to me? I have NEVER initiated a political talk with her -- no side comments, no snark, nothing. So I didn't acknowledge or reply.
Today she called out of the blue to wish me happy birthday. During a pleasant discussion, we talked about COVID -- she does acknowledge COVID and the need for masking since her daughter is a doctor -- Jane told me, "Yeah, California -- a liberal state -- is experiencing a spike too!"
I ignored it and we just continued talking.
BUT these little political bomb-lets she throws into discussions irritate the living hell out of me.
I'm the type of person who thinks of great rejoinders 3 hours after a discussion ends. And I would really rather NOT engage on this stuff, period. So my first thought is just to ignore whatever she says. Not engage. Because if I ask her not to talk politics, it would be her opportunity to say, "Who, me?" It would just hand her power. She would claim the high ground, so to speak.
And I have been holding back for so long I'm afraid if I start engaging, I'm going to end up in a screaming fight ... which won't solve anything or change minds.
As you can see, this is driving me just a bit crazy. As if I weren't crazy enough what with following breaking news 24/7 each day!
Does anyone have a good way of handling this type of situation? Thanks very much.

Local Phoenix news is announcing that the Arizona Democratic Headquarters downtown at Central and Thomas had a fire last night. No one hurt, but the building is a total loss.
South Korea experts recommend anti-HIV, anti-malaria drugs for COVID-19

March 12 (UPI) -- South Korean disease experts have begun to recommend the use of a combination of antiviral and anti-malaria drugs for patients of the new strain of coronavirus.
Kwon Jun-wook, deputy head of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Thursday at a regular press briefing the recommendations come from multiple groups, and that the government is ready to apply the recommendations to patients "where necessary," Newsis reported.
The groups advised discretion among medical professionals, while recommending the administration of Kaletra, an anti-HIV medication that includes the drugs lopinavir and ritonavir. Kaletra blocks the ability of HIV to replicate itself, and also inhibits the growth of cancer cells.
South Korean experts are also recommending the use of hydroxychloroquine in combination with the anti-HIV medication. HCQ is sold under the brand name Plaquenil, among others, and is used for the prevention and treatment of malaria.
