As I age, I am more appreciative of Hank Thoreau's advice: "Simplify, simplify."
After a few hours of weeding and mowing and brush clearing on a day with temps in the nineties, I now sincerely appreciate the luxury of a glass of cool clean water, a bench in the shade and a gentle breeze.
I have a dry place to sleep, plenty to eat, books to read, sunsets and moonrises to admire, birdsong for my alarm and a woman I have loved for over half a century.
Is there really anything more to want?
This was my 73rd summer solstice and it seems to me that ALL of the days of the year---
and the weeks and the months---are getting shorter.

After 4 years of Trump's cruel, ignorant, greedy incompetence and the reduction of the former
GOP into a cult of mean-spirited ass-kissers, the fact that there is even a smidgen of doubt about whether the Democrats will win the midterms makes some of us wonder whether we---as a NATION---deserve to survive.
"I'm an ignorant racist asshole and proud of it!" is not the motto of a rational political party. Either the Republican party or America as we know it must perish.
Does anyone know when the January 6th hearings AFTER this Thursday are scheduled? Or
have they not yet been set?

I grew up understanding that th his was a "given"; my birthright as an American. I cannot tell you how deeply it disturbs---ANGERS---me that one of the major political parties in the United States of America is preparing to abandon democracy in order to achieve a short term political advantage.
Republicans or Trumpies or MAGAvolk---whatever they are now---fit my definition of "traitors". They are willing to destroy the America we all grew up in and welcome in an era in which might makes right and winning is worth WHATEVER it costs.
I will never trust or respect anyone who flies a Trump or MAGA flag.

"Nothing happened at the Capitol after I spoke at my great rally on January 6th last year."
"Some Antifa and BLM agitators tried to persuade the MAGA patriots to riot, but they only toured the Capitol."
"Some damage and vandalism was done inside the Capitol, but none of my supporters broke any laws."
"A very few of my supporters used bad judgment and allowed themselves to be led astray by the Antifa and BLM thugs!"
"There was no conspiracy to overthrow the government and no crimes were committed!"
"To the extent that there was a conspiracy or detailed plan to stop the confirmation of electors, I knew nothing of it and certainly took no part in it."

And, coming soon: "When I am re-elected, I will declare a federal holiday to be celebrated each January 6th. It will be known as 'MAGA Patriots Day'!"
Ooh! Ooh! MAGA/Wingnut/QOP states! TheTexas GOP just took the lead in your contest to adopt
the most despicable, irrational and profoundly stupid policies! They have "officially"---as a party---opposed transgender folks and homosexuals and have proudly---DUH!---declared that Joe Biden is NOT the POTUS! Kinda takes your breath away, doesn't it?
I know you are now gnashing your teeth and rending your garments as you struggle to come up with something to top THAT, but----not to worry! I can help!
First, you declare that LBJ was never validly elected because---whatever---interference by Fidel Castro, he was born in New Zealand---whatever and, therefore, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was bogus and all votes cast thereafter by minority citizens were bogus! Subtract out those votes and a whole truckload of "woke" statutes passed by the libs will have to be declared invalid by the new 9 Republican justices on the SCOTUS.
Next, you REQUIRE marksmanship training as part of all first grade curriculums and present each 8th grade graduate with their very own AR 15 paid for by taxes on electric vehicles and all electricity provided by solar or wind power.
Finally, you not only declare English the "official" language in your state, you make speaking any other language in public a crime punishable by loss of citizenship ( if applicable ), or death by public stoning.
THAT ought to show Texas what state REAL Americans live in!

The most charitable characterization of someone still wearing a MAGA cap and flying a
"TRUMP 2024" flag that I can manage is "incredibly---almost unbelievably---ignorant". If they do not merit that charity---and most of them do not--- they are evil, plain and simple.
They are willing to offend any who do not genuflect at Trump's altar and violate any custom, tradition or law that might impede or prevent the re-election of a man who has robbed them, lied to them and caused thousands of them to die. The object of their mindless worship despises them and has willingly used them as cannon fodder against cops or politicians who dare stand in his way.
What do they get out of their zealous support of the monster Trump? Why, he tells them that their violence, their bigotry and racism, their intolerance, their hatred of "the other" is not just acceptable; it is wonderful---because it is Just. Like. Him!
Piss on these people---unless they're on fire. Then, let 'em burn to the ground.
