Boeing to shrink workforce, raise cash as coronavirus slams jet industry

BUSINESS NEWS APRIL 29, 2020 / 7:47 AM / UPDATED 18 MINUTES AGO

(Reuters) - Boeing Co (BA.N) said on Wednesday it would cut its 160,000-person workforce by about 10%, further reduce 787 Dreamliner production and try to boost liquidity as it prepares for a years-long industry recovery from the coronavirus pandemic that drove its second consecutive quarterly loss.

Boeing shares closed 5.9% higher to $139 after the company said it was confident of getting sufficient liquidity to fund operations and would have positive cash flow next year as it ramps up production of the grounded 737 MAX.

After the market close, S&P lowered its credit rating for Boeing to BBB-, one step above junk, saying that earnings and cash flow over the next few years are likely to be lower than it had previously expected due to the impact of the coronavirus.

Reuters reported on Tuesday that Boeing is working with investment banks on a potential bond deal worth at least $10 billion. Last month it drew down its entire $13.8 billion credit line and is also weighing seeking government aid.

And this is going to add to the job loss report and other downside factors to the suppliers of the OEM.......and apparently they will not design a replacement model for the venerable 757 market..........

GOP congressman: Quarantine health officials without pay to 'see how they like it'

By Josh Israel -April 29, 2020 2:00 PM

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) wants to get rid of public health experts who urged social distancing.

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) told a Fox News radio program on Tuesday that he would like to see members of the national coronavirus task force quarantined without pay to punish them for advocating social distancing.

Appearing on "Fox Across America," Biggs was asked about National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci and White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx. He said both should given "the gold watch" and told to "exit stage left" before blaming them for a host of "societal problems."

From his Fox News Radio interview:

Republicans attack House Democrats for listening to doctor and staying home

By Dan Desai Martin -April 29, 2020 3:33 PM

Democrats, heeding the advice of the Capitol physician, have canceled plans to return to D.C. next week.

GOP House members are angry that Democratic leaders are heeding the advice of medical experts during a national health crisis.

Republicans were critical this week of an announcement from Majority Leader Steny Hoyer that the House would not reconvene in Washington, D.C., on May 4 as originally planned. Democratic leaders made the decision based on the advice of Brian Monahan, the House physician, according to Roll Call.

"The House doctor, when I talked to him yesterday, was concerned because the numbers in the District of Columbia are going up," Hoyer said.

Monahan spoke "forcefully" of his concerns about members returning to the DC area, Hoyer added.

So to the republicans that are bitching about what the Democrats are doing to keep people alive by "listening to a doctor", yes a "doctor"...................would your fucking "doctor" tell you to shove a UV light up your ass, and " inject Lysol into your vein" and tell you it is just fine and dandy..........can you give us your primary physicians name..............oh yeah I have it here......................

McConnell: Lawsuits against 'brave businesspeople' are 'the second pandemic'

By Oliver Willis -April 29, 2020 4:02 PM

McConnell has said workers shouldn't be allowed to sue employers if they become infected with coronavirus on the job.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he will not allow any coronavirus relief legislation to make it through the Senate unless workers are prevented from suing employers if they get sick on the job.

McConnell previously described such provisions as a "red line" he is unwilling to cross.

On Wednesday, the majority leader spoke with Fox News' Brian Kilmeade and compared workers' ability to sue employers to a "second pandemic" that could overwhelm "brave businesspeople" trying to reopen their companies.

From the April 29 edition of Fox News Radio's "Brian Kilmeade Show":

Hey #Moscow Mitch...............first your a fucking asshole and your business model has killed people literally, you fucking libertarian POS, and second next time you go out in public make sure you get what looks like a piece of shit out of the bottom your teeth along the gum line .......on second thought leave it there, it shows what kind of business you have been performing............catch my drift.............

The Next Big Hurdle In Easing Lockdowns: Making Public Transit Safe

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — In cities around the world, public transit systems are key to getting workers back on the job and restarting devastated economies, yet everything from trains and buses to ferries and bicycles will have to be re-imagined in the coronavirus era.

In Europe in particular, public transportation is shaping up as a new front line in the battle to tame the outbreak that has killed over 120,000 of its citizens.

In hard-hit Italy, Spain, France and Britain, standing cheek-to-jowl with fellow commuters in packed trains or trams was as much a part of the morning routine in pre-coronavirus times as a steaming shot of espresso or a crispy croissant.

That’s going to have to change as authorities try to restart their economies without losing their hard-won gains in controlling the spread of the virus.

So in Europe a lot of kids travel by train or bus.............how is that going to work...........

PARIS (AP) — Airbus says the aviation industry’s unprecedented troubles are just beginning.

The European manufacturing giant reported 481 million euros ($515 million) in losses in the first quarter, put thousands of workers on furlough and sought billions in loans to survive the coronavirus crisis. And its CEO said Wednesday it’s still at an “early stage.”

Even after virus-related travel restrictions eventually ease, Chief Executive Guillaume Faury acknowledged it will take a long time to persuade customers to get back on planes. Just how long, he can’t predict.

“We are in the gravest crisis the aerospace industry has ever known,” Faury said. “Now we need to work as an industry to restore passenger confidence in air travel as we learn to coexist with this pandemic.”

Images shared online of packed planes and maskless, elbow-to-elbow passengers on U.S. flights – despite virus protection guidelines – have worried travelers and airline unions alike. International travel restrictions, meanwhile, have grounded thousands of planes worldwide.

Navy Will Keep Probing Captain Crozier, Despite Recommending He Get His Job Back

The spotlight will continue to shine on Capt. Brett Crozier, who was relieved of command earlier this month after ringing alarm bells about the spread of COVID-19 aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

Despite recommending last week that Crozier be reinstated as commander of the Roosevelt, Acting Navy Secretary James McPherson said in a statement Wednesday that had he had “follow up” questions that could only be answered with more investigation — a “follow-on command investigation,” as he put it.

“This investigation will build on the good work of the initial inquiry to provide a more fulsome understanding of the sequence of events, actions, and decisions of the chain of command surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt,” McPherson said.

Crozier became a nationwide news story when a letter he wrote to Navy higher-ups warning of the spread of the novel coronavirus aboard his ship was leaked to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Navy officials did eventually heed the letter’s request, removing the vast majority of the ship’s crew. But then-Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly removed Crozier from his command as a result of the dust up. Modly told reporters at the time that Crozier could have “walked down the hall” to his immediate boss rather than sending a letter.

The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Kansas proof-of-citizenship voter registration requirement in a decision issued Wednesday.

The appeals court backed the trial judge’s finding that the requirement, which was championed by then-Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R), violated both the Equal Protection clause of the Constitution and the National Voter Registration Act.
