"People want to get home for Valentine's Day."

Multiple sources close to the impeachment managers disputed that claim, saying instead it was significant pressure from Senate Democrats that resulted in their decision to change course. The House managers wanted to bring Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.) in to testify, only relenting after receiving pushback from multiple Senate Democrats, they said.

During the Senate break after the witness vote Saturday, Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) twice came into the managers’ room off the Senate floor, according to multiple Democratic sources. Coons pressed House Democrats to relent, saying their quest for witnesses would cost them Republican votes to convict and maybe even some Democrats.

"The jury is ready to vote," Coons told the managers, according to a senior House Democratic aide. "People want to get home for Valentine‘s Day."

Coons later returned a second time to urge the managers to take a deal with Trump's lawyers to enter what House Democrats viewed as damning evidence from Herrera Beutler into the record. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) also approached a House manager in the hallway to urge them against calling witnesses, according to sources close to the managers.

EDIT: Please note that House Managers could NOT have called witnesses earlier. No one was allowed to do that until that moment Saturday morning.

Are we now going to say that the DOJ can't pursue Trump because it will detract from a Biden agenda?

If impeachment was a "distraction" and an impediment to the Biden agenda, how the hell is an ongoing investigation, run by Biden's DOJ (which unlike the Senate is not in a separate branch of government), not a distraction and an impediment?

Please explain.

And now Republicans are constantly interrupting the presentation

Of course they are! They can do anything! There are NO rules for Republicans! NONE!

I am beside myself with rage and anger right now.

I'm shaking at what just happened!

A stupid reading of an already public statement!

They passed a motion to call witnesses and then didn't call witnesses!

That testimony would have been extremely embarrassing for Republicans.

Today's process makes it look like Democrats caved to Republican threats. Republicans will be laughing about this for weeks.

I'm ENRAGED!

The Senate should vote to form a Rule XI committee to gather evidence

Alan Frumin on CNN just said the Senate might be able to form a committee to gather evidence! That is what I have been saying.

The Senate should vote to form a Rule XI committee to gather evidence for the impeachment.

In 1934 Senator Henry Ashurst of Arizona, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, offered the resolution that became Rule XI after its adoption the following year. Rule XI provided:

That in the trial of any impeachment the Presiding Officer of the Senate, if the Senate so orders, shall appoint a committee of senators to receive evidence and take testimony at such times and places as the committee may determine…

This wasn't intended for sitting Presidents, but Trump is a former Federal official.

The committee would be blockbuster TV for our side! And the full Senate could continue as normal!

Sen. Ron Johnson angry at Romney, apparently

LOL THIS is what this trial is all about! Dividing Republicans! The final vote at the end is only one part of this.

Wow, Ron Johnson picked a fight with Mitt Romney on the Senate floor just now after this witness vote, per pooler @jason_donner

“Ron Johnson turned to Mitt Romney and was upset with him, even pointing at him once. Johnson was visibly upset....”

Dear media: The Senate voted on Raskin's motion. Trump's lawyer didn't make a motion.

Raskin made a motion to call Rep. Herrera Beutler as a witness, and reserved the right to call more.

Trump's lawyer made no motion.

That is what the Senate voted on.

EDIT: I believe Trump's lawyer can now make a motion. I assume the GOP is compiling a list of witnesses.

The Senate is scheduled to go into recess this week - call witnesses!

Just an FYI. For those saying we need to end impeachment now so the Senate can get on to passing the COVID relief bill.

- The COVID relief bill is not ready for a vote.

- The Senate is scheduled to go into recess for a week:
https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CCAL-117scal-2021-02-13/pdf/CCAL-117scal-2021-02-13.pdf

- Witnesses were called in the Clinton impeachment

- Democrats tried to call witnesses in Trump's first impeachment, but were voted down

- The rules allow for the calling of witnesses today

- Witnesses would be deposed on recorded video, which could then be played to the Senate.

EDIT: LOL. Even Romney is OK with calling witnesses

Breaking: Whitehouse calls for trial to be suspended, wants to depose McCarthy and Tuberville.

Do it! Do it! Do it!

https://twitter.com/kylegriffin1/status/1360453875824664578

One way to clear it up? Suspend trial to depose McCarthy and Tuberville under oath and get facts. Ask Secret Service to produce for review comms back to White House re VP Pence safety during siege. What did Trump know, and when did he know it?
