About Me

65 years old. Lifelong democrat. Saw JFK in New Haven CT on election eve 1960. I was all of 5 years old. Cast my first vote for Jimmy Carter. Stayed up all night at the English Speaking Union I London to watch the returns. We celebrated the results about 9 AM London time. I cried the morning I learned Bobby Kennedy had been shot. I don't think I ever quite recovered, although President Obama's election helped a lot. These days I'm a moderate democrat and a cultural conservative. I miss the world of good manners, fancy dress and dancing cheek to cheek. Big TCM fan.

The end of Fox News.

From Politico Playbook PM:

WAIT, THEY KILLED THE FOX?!? — NBC’s @frankthorp just tweeted that officials put down the poor fox that was spotted and captured on Capitol Hill on Tuesday: “SAD NEWS on the Capitol Hill fox beat, per DC Health: ‘The fox responsible for 9 confirmed bites on Capitol Hill yesterday was captured and humanely euthanized so that rabies testing may be done. The fox was an adult female and her kits were found and captured this morning.’”

We’re animal lovers, so this officially ruined our day. Maybe our week.

Where's twogunsid?

I need to start picking horses for the Kentucky Derby!

Why Ba.2 Covid cases haven't surged in the U.S.

From this morning's NY Times newsletter The Morning:

4. Another mystery
Throughout the pandemic, Osterholm — the Minnesota epidemiologist — has lamented that many scientists, journalists and laypeople exaggerate how much we actually know about Covid. His favorite example: The Alpha variant swept through Michigan and Minnesota last year and then largely died out, without causing case increases in other parts of the U.S. Another example: BA.2 has recently become the dominant variant in India, South Africa and some other countries without causing a spike in cases.

When I called Osterholm yesterday to ask why cases had not surged over the past few weeks, he simply said: “I don’t know, and I don’t think anybody really knows.”

Of all the variants, only the original Omicron was so contagious that it spread around the world in predictable ways, he said. Other versions of the virus have surged and receded in mysterious ways, much as a forest fire can die out without burning down an entire forest.

That's not going to work either.

Cases in CT are up a bit but still at very low levels.

It may be the Ukrain army is in hot pursuit of the Russians

retreating from the east of Kyiv. There is an awful lot of video on twitter of abandoned and destroyed Russian vehicles today.

If this happened today it's really important. Be nice to scratch a Russian ship.

Somebody posted a list of damaged ships in the Ukraine war today. A fair number of patrol craft on both sides have been hit.
